A love letter to the Karoo

Karoo Lodge

Encircled by a natural amphitheatre of mountains, Karoo Lodge is a unique family-friendly safari lodge with a true sense of place.

This lovingly-reimagined farmhouse is where the Samara Story began in 1997. Combining traditional Karoo style and modern South African design with personal touches evoking Samara’s journey as a family-run conservation project, Karoo Lodge offers an elevated home away from home experience for guests of all ages. Extensive renovations during 2023 have expanded and upgraded facilities with a focus on sustainability. Karoo Lodge comprises 10 suites across two room types: eight Karoo Suites and two Karoo Family Suites, sleeping up to 24 guests.

Sleeps 2 guests

Karoo Suite

Eight Karoo Suites are standalone cottages a short distance from the main Karoo Lodge homestead. Ideal for couples, each spacious suite contains a four-poster bed, fireplace, air-conditioning and luxury en-suite bathroom with large separate bath and shower and two washbasins, and an outdoor shower. Private covered patios with outdoor seating look out over the dramatic mountain landscape, providing the ideal location for morning coffee or a nightcap under the stars.

Sleeps 4 guests

Karoo Family Suite

Two Karoo Family Suites are set within the Karoo Lodge grounds. Each standalone unit consists of two en-suite bedrooms and a shared living room. Each bedroom contains a fireplace, air-conditioning and luxury en-suite bathroom with large separate bath, shower, outdoor shower and two wash basins. A shared private covered verandah with outdoor seating overlooks the Karoo landscape. The maximum capacity in each Karoo Family Suite is 4 adults plus one child under the age of 12 on an extra bed in the shared living area.

Understated elegance

Inside the homestead

An authentic, layered aesthetic celebrates the unique soulfulness of the Karoo throughout the main lodge – embracing natural tones and fabrics with a characterful interplay of antiques and modern South African craftsmanship. Living, dining and learning spaces include two inviting sitting rooms, an atmospheric dining room, library, bar, farm-style kitchen, Spekboom-filled courtyard, wine cellar, Story Room and quintessentially "Karoo" wraparound verandah. Outside, the indigenous landscaping blends the welcoming oasis of a Karoo homestead garden (including refreshing swimming pool) with the natural veld that surrounds it, replete with aloes, wild grasses and Jacketplum trees.
