Helicopter flights

We have teamed up with FlyKaroo Air Services to bring you two types of helicopter experience - as an air transfer from Graaff-Reinet or as an extra special safari experience.

Helicopter transfers

The charter helicopter flights organised by FlyKaroo offer the quickest and most exhilarating way to reach Samara’s lodges. Both Karoo Lodge and The Manor are a quick 12-15 minute hop from Graaff-Reinet in a Robinson R66, a safe and comfortable helicopter seating up to 4 passengers. Your luggage will either fly with you or be taken to the lodges on a 45-minute road transfer, depending on space availability.

You can choose to depart from the Graaff-Reinet Golf Course, nestled on a curve of the Sundays River, which is a good option if you have had an overnight stay in Graaff-Reinet. Alternatively, you can fly in to Graaff-Reinet’s airport in a charter plane and depart by helicopter directly from there. The choice is yours!

Helicopter charters are also available from Port Elizabeth.

Helicopter picnics

One of Samara’s signature experiences is the mountaintop Samara Mara picnic, and a helicopter flip adds a new twist to this old classic.

Depart either from Graaff-Reinet or from one of Samara’s lodges on a 15-20 minute scenic flight over the Samara Mara, spotting Cape mountain zebra, black wildebeest and gemsbok and marvelling at the spectacular scenery as you fly. The helicopter will come to rest on the flat mountaintop with mile upon mile of wilderness for as far as the eye can see.

You’ll have the opportunity to stretch your legs on a short walk to your private picnic spot overlooking 180km of the Plains of Camdeboo. Indulge in a lovingly-prepared Karoo Kitchen picnic. You’ll then have the option of helicoptering down again or hopping onto a Samara vehicle for a game drive back to the lodge.

This experience can be booked as part of our Deluxe Honeymoon Package or as an added-extra if you are planning to propose.
