Vuyani Safe Haven Christmas Party

By Samara on December 18, 2012

I’m sure most of us have nostalgic memories of Christmas day as a child; getting spoiled, having a delicious feast and spending quality time with family. This is how Christmas as a child should be remembered. Yet, some children are not as fortunate. The children from Vuyani Safe Haven do not have the loving parents and financial support to allow for special Christmas memories. And so the Samara Wildlife Volunteer Programme hosts an annual Christmas party for Vuyani Safe Haven and raises money to pay for school fees, clothes and gifts.

On the 9th of December about 30 kids, as well as the carers, social workers and Vuyani board members arrived at Samara Private Game Reserve for a day of fun. It was a great success! After an exciting entrance by Santa Claus on a Land Cruiser to hand out gifts and toys, lunch was served on the lawn, followed by cake, ice cream and refreshing slices of watermelon. In the heat of the day, the swimming pool and water pistols were the main attractions, while the younger kids raced around playing ball games and flying kites.

Interacting with the Vuyani children is always rewarding. We provide them with enjoyable experiences to remind them that they deserve to be loved, and at the same time, they remind us to appreciate the smaller things in life. Watching a child’s face light up as they are given a gift really and truly warms the heart. The most tear jerking moment for us was the song that the children sang at the end of the day to say thank you; it was probably the most sincere and beautiful expression of gratitude we have ever received. We look forward to another year of helping Vuyani Safe haven; it is always a pleasure.
