In this short blog series we present the various accommodation options at Samara to help you choose the best one for you.
First up – the Manor. Renovated in 2008, the Manor sits on the site of an old 19th century farmhouse with title deeds going back to Lord Charles Somerset. Care was taken during the renovations to stay true to the old Cape Dutch style, although more modern design features have been added.
The design overhaul in 2008 was led by John Jacob Zwiegelaar, at the time one of South Africa’s most precocious young designers. In 2010, the Manor was the first South African property to be featured in the main section of the UK’s House and Garden magazine – a big feat in design terms! Renowned for his visionary aesthetic, Zwiegelaar transformed the Manor into the stylish yet comfortable home that it is today.
We present below our favourite reasons to book into the Manor for a few days. Do be warned though, after experiencing this level of laidback luxury, you most definitely won’t want to leave!
1. Relax in your home away from home
As soon as you turn off your car’s engine, the gentle sound of running water from the fountain at the Manor’s entrance will start to calm your nerves. You won’t know which of the four bedrooms to choose – each is beautifully-appointed with tall windows and deliciously comfortable beds. In summer, loll by the pool in the covered outdoor sitting room, whilst the winter months are best spent curled up in one of the reading nooks next to the fireplace. Revel in the calm and tranquillity of the Karoo – true nectar for the soul.
2. Game-viewing from your doorstep
As much an oasis for the local wildlife as it is for its human visitors, the Manor attracts a multitude of animal species. Delight in the sight of approaching buffalo, intent on mowing the lush green lawn; catch a lucky glimpse of a rhino in the early hours; marvel at the Karoo’s variety of bird species right from your stoep. As the day winds down, enjoy the antics of baby monkeys, baboons and warthogs as they frolic in the late afternoon sun.
3. Perfect getaway with friends
With its four double bedrooms and ample seating areas, the Manor provides the perfect weekend escape with friends. Swim laps in the pool, relax over a glass of wine, make use of the board games and reading material in the sitting room, and enjoy fine dining both indoors and out. Bush dinners and mountain picnics can be arranged to make your time together even more special.
4. The ultimate in privacy
The Manor is an exclusive use villa, so you can relax in complete privacy without intrusion from other guests. Your private chef, ranger and butler will work with you to create your ideal holiday schedule to ensure you get the most out of your stay with us. You may decide to opt for a bush walk instead of a drive – through the riverine thicket of the Milk River that meanders past the homestead, keeping ears and eyes peeled for buffalo and black rhino. Or you could simply take a siesta on the comfiest outdoor sofas you’ll ever come across – without the worry of being disturbed.
5. Ideal for celebrations
Having hosted more than its fair share of birthdays, weddings and parties, the Manor is well-used to the fanfare that accompanies such celebrations. Spend Christmas there en famille, treat your loved one to a surprise milestone birthday party, or simply celebrate being alive. We can’t wait to help you curate an unforgettable Samara experience!
