September 2013 Guide report

By Samara on September 13, 2013

Spring is in the air and slowly the day time temperatures have started to increase as the sun peaks over the horizon, earlier every day. Rains have come, we are a little unsure if we are having late winter rain or early summer rain, either way some wildflowers have started popping up here and there. Adding a touch of colour to an otherwise dry Karoo.

Our wildlife have spread out a little and are not being completely reliant on the permanent water sources. Guides and guests are having to work a little harder to find the wealth of life that we know resides here. Our game drive times are starting to get to normality as we head out early in the morning. The change of seasons has also brought a change in behavior, our famous Aardvarks have gone back to the nocturnal ways. We still know so little about them, do they become nocturnal again for their own comforts and safety or is it because there food supply of termites are active again at night? Probably a combination of these.

This month also saw the passing of Belini, she will always be remembered for her ability to hunt adult kudu bulls, not something one expects from a female cheetah. Sibella has moved back onto the valley floor and our sightings have been getting much better.

Antelope have scattered because of the rain, but its been a week now since the last rainfall, so pebbles are drying. We are expecting an increase of activity near the larger water holes.

We have started keeping an eye on the skies, we should be expecting the first of the season migratory birds back soon. Keep an eye on our Facebook Page for these updates, as they happen.
