Ranger Diaries – An exciting and memorable wildlife experience

By Samara on May 22, 2015

Cheetah Update – The male cheetah has been patrolling up Kondoa mountain as usual, he seems to like it up there. The female cheetah however likes to wander and was spotted several times north of the reserve around Karoo lodge and Manor house lately.

As the veld changes the movement of the animals seem to change as well. So as rangers we need to adapt as too. This month has been more challenging to ensure good sightings , but we took to the challenge and did longer drives on average to find game. I’m happy to report it paid off and our sightings were great. Our guests enjoyed fabulous sightings, such as herds of Eland, Zebra, Oryx, Cheetah and great Karoo sunsets. The clouds made for some amazing sunset scenes.

My guests and I we were very lucky to be in the right place at the right time. We “bumped into” a journey of giraffes. The giraffes were crossing the open plains of camdeboo and were running towards the opposite side of where we were standing. The giraffes stopped as they saw us approaching and seemed nervous . As we got closer they immediately started galloping away and again stopped some distance away from us. The whole journey looked back at us as we walked towards them. As one of the guests said – “This was truly an exciting and memorable wildlife experience”.
