Busy Volunteers!

By Samara on July 9, 2013

Over the last month or so the Volunteer programme has had a busy time. We had an amazing group of volunteers here and got some very important work done.

Our soil erosion management is well now under way and we planted some 120 spekboom cuttings in degraded areas. Here we also made some inroads in creating a better area for plants to establish in, by making swales, small shallow holes in the ground, promoting water infiltration. These measures were reinforced by rock packing to slow down water flow.

The Shackless roof, as it has been affectionately dubbed, is almost no more. A substantial dent was made in the structure. With only a few more visit it will be down to its foundations. Very hard work went into this and we are so thankful for the hard work of the group of volunteers.

Sibella and her cubs have been a constant source of amusement and interest to the volunteers. We found her on a few kills with her cubs. On one occurance we had a great viewing of the two of them playing tug of war with a kudu carcass.

A day was also spent at the Vuyani Safe Haven in Graaff Reinet. Here we planted some vegetables and helped out with clearing the park we visited later the day, of glass and other rubbish. The afternoon was spent playing with the children and giving them some love and attention. All in all a great day! There was also a great donation made by Lathallan for the upgrade of one of the bathrooms, and the placement of new doors at Vuyani. Some children’s books were also donated by the volunteers, along with toys and sweet things for the children.

We would like to thank the staff and students from Lathallan, along with Jessica Parker, and Christina Vogel, for their hard work and determination. Without you none of this would be possible. Thank you for the tremendous fun we had and for all the great work we got done.
Until Next time
Carli and the Volunteers
