Another great review by Humphrey Wrey

By Samara on December 5, 2011

After two nights at Rhodes university and we set off for Samara.
Samara was incredible, its a 5 Star Game reserve in the Karoo a semi-desert part of South Africa just a few hours from Port Elizabeth, Sarah Thompkins the owner started building it over 7 years ago and my brother and sister have both worked there tracking the cheetahs on the reserve.

There is one cheetah there called Sibella which we found after just 30 minutes on a game drive and we walked up close to her with her being completely relaxed. She holds the world record for Cheetah cubs having litters of 5, 6 and 7 cubs with of all those ony 1 dying whereas in big game reserves where they are in close proximity with lions and hyenas the average is about 1 in 3 reach adolecence hence the world record held by this cheetah especially since 4 is a good size litter for a cheetah in the first place and Sibella was nearly killed when she was younger by poaching dogs.

The food there was incredible, rack of lamb and dinners outide, absolutely amazing and a world away from what we’ve been used to, no tents or roll mats here! Eventually Samara will be built up to a big 5 game reserve and have Rhinos at the moment which also we found on foot when down wind of them. It was an amazing stay, such a beautifully relaxed lodge and no fences; so until the arrival of a pride of lions is a very unique way to enjoy an amazing array of game that is easy to find whether in a car or not.
